With the third anniversary of the Beijing 2022 Games approaching, the Beijing Olympic City Development Foundation, Beijing State-owned Assets Management Co., Ltd. (BSAM) and Capital University of Physical Education and Sports (Beijing Institute for International Olympic Studies) jointly launched the “Ice and Snow for a Shared Future” Beijing Winter Olympic Venues Youth Olympic Education Series at the National Speed Skating Oval on 7 January 2025, under the guidance of BODA and the Beijing Municipal Education Commission. Han Zirong, member of the Party Leadership Group of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Executive Vice President of BODA, announced the launch of the event. Also present at the ceremony were Li Yongjun, Chairperson of the Beijing Olympic City Development Foundation; Guo Zhiguo, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Deputy General Manager of BSAM; Zuo Wei, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Capital University of Physical Education and Sports (CUPES); and Wei Dengfan, Secretary-General of the Beijing Olympic City Development Foundation.

At the launch ceremony, the hosts presented scrolls encouraging participation in winter sports and complimentary skating tickets to the representatives of schools involved in the youth Olympic education series. Addressing the ceremony on behalf of the hosts, Li Yongjun said that the Beijing Olympic City Development Foundation is committed to pooling strengths to promote the preservation and utilisation of the Olympic legacy and support sustainable city development. In 2020, the Beijing Olympic City Development Foundation and BSAM jointly established a special Olympic development fund aimed at spreading the Olympic culture and promoting the development of the Olympic cause. After the Beijing 2022 Games, the Beijing Olympic City Development Foundation, BSAM and Capital University of Physical Education and Sports (Beijing Institute for International Olympic Studies) launched the “Ice and Snow for a Shared Future” Olympic education series, with the care and support of BODA and the Beijing Municipal Education Commission. This year’s event is planned to last from January to August 2025, with the aim to promote deep integration of sustainable use of the Winter Olympic legacy and youth Olympic education, inject new vitality into Olympic education and post-Games use of venues in Beijing, further popularise winter sports and advance Olympic education after the Beijing 2022 Games.

At the launch ceremony, student representatives from Beijing Fengtai Foreign Languages School took a tour of the National Speed Skating Oval, also known as the Ice Ribbon. They appreciated the beauty of architecture, charm of science and technology, and Chinese culture and dual Olympic legacy embedded in the venue and learned about the wonderful stories of the Ice Ribbon.

This year’s activities will be held at the National Speed Skating Oval for the first time, aiming to leverage the unique charm of the National Speed Skating Oval in integrating sports and technology and its distinctive educational resources such as the Green Olympics Classroom, the Green Olympics Collection of Works and Exhibition and the Olympic Culture Student Reporters Programme to inspire students’ interest in winter sports and the Winter Olympic culture and build diverse learning and practice platforms for them. Some 3,500 students from 30 schools including special education schools, minority schools, Olympic education demonstration schools, winter sports schools and mountain schools will be invited to the venue to feel the spirit of the Beijing 2022 Games and the charm of winter sports.
It is learned that the Beijing Olympic City Development Foundation, BSAM and Capital University of Physical Education and Sports (Beijing Institute for International Olympic Studies) will continue working together to engage more students in winter sports, enrich the “Ice and Snow for a Shared Future” series of activities, further strengthen the impact of public interest activities, carry on the spirit of the Beijing 2022 Games, and promote deep integration of the sustainable use of the Winter Olympic legacy and youth Olympic education. The goal is that Beijing, the first and the only city that has hosted both the Summer and Winter Olympics, will be always infused with youthful vitality and athletic passion.

Representatives from the first batch of schools involved in this Olympic education series also participated in the ceremony. These schools include the Experimental Primary School of RDFZ (the High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China), Beijing Chaoyang No. 2 Experimental Primary School, Beijing Fuxue Hutong Primary School in Dongcheng District, Beijing Affiliated Elementary School of Chaoyang Normal School, the Primary School Affiliated to Beijing Jiaotong University, the Experimental Primary School Affiliated to Beijing Haidian Teachers Training School, the Experimental School Affiliated to Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Experimental School Affiliated to Beijing Haidian District Teachers Training School, Beijing Chen Jinglun High School Jiaming Branch, the Middle School Affiliated to the University of International Business and Economics, Beijing Chaoyang Jiangfu Experimental School, Beijing Chaoyang District Fangcaodi International School, Beijing Fengtai Foreign Languages School and Beijing Niulanshan First Secondary School Experimental School.
