Two Chinese Sports Films Receive Guirlande d’Honneur Award at 42nd Milano International FICTS Fest

The SPORT MOVIES & TV 2024 – 42nd Milano International FICTS Fest was held in Milan, Italy from 5 to 9 November 2024. The Awards Ceremony took place at the Lombardy Hall in Milan on the evening of 9 November, where some 600 sports film practitioners from all over the world together witnessed the announcement of awards. Hi, Asian Games - Female and Invisible Summit, two Chinese sports films submitted by the Beijing International Sports Film Week, were granted the Guirlande d’Honneur Award. Football on the Roof and The Karate Source were “Nominated” productions. Wang Kun, Deputy Secretary General of the Beijing Olympic City Development Association (BODA), and Li Haihong, Deputy Head of the Development Research Department of BODA, received the Guirlande d’Honneur Award as representatives of the film crew.

Hi, Asian Games - Female and Invisible Summit won the Guirlande d’Honneur Award in the Olympic and Paralympic Spirit category. Hi, Asian Games – Female recounts the struggle of female athletes at the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022, showcasing the power of female sporting spirit in the new era. Invisible Summit revolves around climbers’ exploration in nature and challenge to push beyond personal limits. Featuring stunning visuals and nuanced storytelling, it demonstrates the indomitable spirit of humanity in extreme environments.

Football on the Roof, which was nominated in the Movies & TV Football category, presents the endeavours of young people to chase their dreams, although they have to play football on the roof of urban buildings. This film highlights the passion of  youngsters for sports in the context of rapid urbanization.

The Karate Source was nominated in the Sports and Society category. The film dives into the origin of karate in Chinese culture, tracking back to the term “Tang Shou” in the Tang Dynasty. By revisiting the martial arts (Wushu) traditions of Shaolin Temple, the film takes audiences on a journey back to the origins of Wushu and presents the preservation and evolution of Wushu culture.

At the event, Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, sent a video message to the 42nd Milano International FICTS Fest.

The Fédération Internationale Cinéma Tèlevision Sportifs (FICTS) presented commemorative scarves to the representatives of the 20 Festivals in recognition of their outstanding contributions.

A range of activities took place during the 42nd Milano International FICTS Fest. The 15 shortlisted Chinese productions were all featured in the screening. Among them, the esports-themed Chase for Glory and the female-themed Hi, Asian Games – Female were screened offline, both productions about the Asian Games Hangzhou 2022. These films demonstrate the diversity and vitality of Chinese sports and epitomises China’s sporting spirit, impressing global audiences with the vigour and cultural charm of Chinese society.

A 20-year retrospective exhibition on the Beijing International Sports Film Week was staged during the event. The exhibition presents the history of the Beijing International Sports Film Week in the last 20 years and displays the posters of outstanding entries shortlisted for the festival in Beijing and Chinese productions that received awards in Milan. The exhibition looks back on the 20-year epic journey of the Beijing International Sports Film Week, giving audiences a taste of the unique charm of Chinese sports culture.

The Beijing International Sports Film Week is an Olympic themed flagship programme launched in 2005. The 20th Beijing International Sports Film Week was co-hosted by the Beijing International Film Festival Organising Committee, the Chinese Olympic Committee and BODA, and co-organised by the Press Commission of the Chinese Olympic Committee and the Beijing Olympic City Development Centre. After evaluation, 15 out of the 275 entries were to take part in the 42nd Milano International FICTS Fest. The shortlists of the 20th Beijing International Sports Film Week will be publicly screened in the Beijing Olympic Museum, the China National Film Museum and other places.
