Hosted by the Beijing Olympic City Development Centre and organised by the Beijing Summer Palace Administration, the “15th Beijing Olympic City Sports Culture Festival · Olympic Sports Filming Screening” were launched in the front of the Langru Pavilion and in the Scenic Spot of Farming and Weaving of the Summer Palace on the afternoon of 8 August 2024.

The Everlasting Flame, the official film of the Olympic Games Beijing 2008, is the 22th official film in the history of the Modern Olympic Movement and the first Olympic official film produced by Chinese people. It took three years to shoot the film, and the production team travelled to a dozen countries in preparation for it. This film records the whole journey of “a truly exceptional Olympic Games" from the torch-lighting ceremony in ancient Olympia, Greece in March 2008 to the closing ceremony in late August. Through vivid images, it captures the details in the life trajectories of the characters and delves into the athletes' hearts, witnessing the birth of heroes and interpreting their varying perspectives and attitudes toward the Olympics. The film has been permanently archived by the Olympic Museum in Lausanne and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which presents the Oscars each year. The film received the Candido Cannavo Award and the supreme award at the 27th Milano International FICTS Fest and a special prize of the 33th Montreal International Film Festival. It has been recognised as one of the four most outstanding films in the history of Olympic official films, the other three being Olympia (Berlin 1936), Tokyo Olympiad (Tokyo 1964) and The Majestic Olympics (Rome 1960).

With the theme of “The Everlasting Flame Shines in Beijing”, this sports film screening in the picturesque Summer Palace drew a big crowd of local and out-of-town visitors. When watching the film, visitors relived their memories of the spectacle of Beijing 2008 while cheering for Chinese athletes competing in Paris 2024.

According to the hosts, 8 August this year marks the 16th National Fitness Day of China, which was themed “Exercising Together with the Olympics”. The sports film screening coincides with the “Olympic Journey Through Time – Exhibition on Olympic Summer Games” on the east bank of the Kunming Lake in the Summer Palace, giving the visitors an opportunity to revisit the memorable moments at the Olympic Games and carry forward the Olympic spirit. This also enhances their pride in the nation and enthusiasm for sports and inspires the people, especially young people, to engage in sports, disseminate the Olympic culture and be a promoter and a practitioner of the Olympic spirit.
