Beijing Olympic Museum Holds Public Educational Activities to Mark the Olympic Day

On 23 June 2024, the Beijing Olympic Museum organised a variety of public education activities, including a lecture on the Olympic flame, a fou-beating exercise session, and the parent-child sport games for an eco-friendly life, attracting the participation of 30 parents and students from 15 families.

During the lecture on the Olympic flame, the students were shown pictures online about the journey of the Olympic flame to Paris, and given a guidebook titled “How Much Do You Know About the Olympic Flame.” Through the lecture, they increased their knowledge about the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the historical and cultural background of the Olympic flame, and the 60-year history of Sino-French cultural exchanges.

In the fou-beating exercise session, the students followed the instruction of senior teacher Zhou Chenguang, slapped the desk and shouted chants. This unique experience not only cultivated the children’s physical coordination ability, but also showed them the dynamics, passion and joy of Olympics.

In the parent-child sport meeting, parents and children used sports equipment made from discarded mineral water bottles and plastic ocean balls to compete in fun baseball, rocket javelin throwing and other games. These eco-friendly games gave the children a more intuitive understanding of sustainable lifestyles.

At the end of the event, the students had their guidebook stamped with the Museum’s limited-edition stamp to mark the Olympic Day, whose design features the Olympic cauldron to echo the theme of the study tour. The stamp also gave the students a taste of Olympic aesthetics.

It is learned that the fou-beating exercise session was inspired by the impressive fou-beating performance at the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, in which 2,008 actors sang and beat the fou, showing the heroism and passion of the Chinese nation. As a physical education teacher at Yangfangdian Central Primary School, Mr. Zhou Chenguang incorporated the fou-beating movements into physical health exercises. He also used recycled materials to make the sports equipment for the parent-child sport meeting.

According to the organiser, the Museum is not only a location for collection and display, but also a place where the children can learn and grow. This study tour covered several aspects of public education such as lectures, speeches, DIY experience and parent-child interaction, and aimed to arouse children’s interest in Olympic culture and deepen their understanding of Olympic culture through well-designed activities. In the future, the Museum will continue to diversify the form and enrich the content of study tours, dig deep into the Olympic culture, and promote the high-quality development of the Museum’s study tour series.
