Olympic gold-medalist in taekwondo Wu Jingyu donates her championship protective gear to the Beijing Olympic Museum

On July 13, to mark the upcoming 22nd anniversary of Beijing’s successful bid for the 2008 Olympic Games, Hou Kun, member of the IOC Culture and Olympic Heritage Commission, member of the International Pierre de Coubertin Committee, and Wu Jingyu, vice president of the Chinese Taekwondo Association and co-chair of the World Taekwondo Athletes’ Committee, donated several items to the Beijing Olympic Museum. The donation ceremony was hosted by Beijing Olympic City Development Center.

Hou Kun is an Olympic collector, director of the Beijing Olympic Torchbearers Association, director of the International Olympic Collector’s Club, and secretary general and executive vice president of China Sport Philately and Collection Association. At the event site, he donated to the Beijing Olympic Museum the poster for commemorating the establishment of the Olympic Museum Lausanne in 1993 and the “Honor China: Asian Games Seal” – a licensed product of the 19th Asian Games.

Wu Jingyu won the women’s 47kg taekwondo gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and defended her gold medal in the women’s 49kg taekwondo at the London 2012 Olympic Games. She has won numerous world championships and was awarded the title of “Best Olympic Female Athlete” by the World Taekwondo in 2023. Wu donated her championship protective gear used at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to the Beijing Olympic Museum, as well as the handprint and footprint made on site, the first handprint and footprint of Olympic champions collected by the Museum.

Hou Ming, director of the Beijing Olympic Museum, accepted the donation and issued donation certificates to them respectively.

Mr. Hou Kun delivered a speech on behalf of the donors. He said that as a veteran Olympic collector, he wanted to show his support for the renovation and upgrading of the Beijing Olympic Museum with the donation. In the future he will continue to play the role of bridge, and promote the development of the Beijing Olympic Museum and its exchanges and interaction with other Olympic museums around the world.

It happened to be Ms. Wu’s birthday. Fu Xiaohui sent a bouquet to thank her and wish her a happy birthday.
